Title: Saving Player Data
Post by: rudthedud on January 07, 2019, 11:20:11 am
Hello!

I have been playing 7DTD on another server and I am coming back to this one as I really enjoyed the PvE and PvP on the same map along with the great community!

The other server/support team had an option that allowed for Characters to be saved before a wipe so you would not have to start from scratch again after every server wipe (I did this in Alpha 16). You did not keep your items just your level. With Alpha 17 stable out now I am wondering if this could be an option on this server? I know it would take time and of course I would expect to have to make a donation or reoccurring donation for a feature of this level.

Just wanted to know your thoughts. Also I am sorry if this was already posted.

Thanks!

Hello.  I am very familiar with the server you are referring to. I don't think I will be offering this.  But instead of just saying no, please allow me to explain my reasoning in two parts:

1)  I will NEVER ask a member to donate (pay me money) to provide a service.  I don't like that idea on principle.  It literally would only take mere seconds of my time to do what you have asked.  While I certainly appreciate donations and they do help me tremendously, I find that practice very shady and greedy on the part of the other server's owner.

2)  As you know, our server is split-map and as such we allow both PvE AND PvP play styles. It would be very unfair to have such a system in place that would permit a player to start a new seed leveled up while others that don't pay start from square one.  Certainly this could be considered nothing short of "pay-to-win" for the PvP part of our community.

So, I hope you can appreciate my logic in not providing this service for our server.  If this were an ALL PvE server, what you ask for could make sense, but I would never ask for money to do it.  That said, I do intend to provide other in-game perks for donors soon.  But these will be perks that will not give donors unfair advantage over the other players.

I am always open to new ideas so I appreciate your suggestion.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! Just another reason I am coming back here :) Thank you as well for providing a detailed response. I understand your reasons and will respect them. Thank you for proving support for years and not demanding monetary reward, very refreshing to see. For the PvP I do not personally agree with this logic you provided as the same advantage is already given to players if they started on "Day One" vs someone starting on "Day 500". I do get how it can seem like a pay to win after the server restarts and become unfair as time progresses if its a paid feature. It can widen the gap for 'grinding' making some players ready to kill after a server wipe in PvP.

Just some food for thought maybe before a server wipe we can poll people if they would like all player profiles to be kept on the wipe? I know there will always be a difference in opinion as some people will want to start fresh to complete a different perk tree. You own the server and obviously know whats good after running it for 4 years. I am the noob without experience here ;D

Again thanks for taking the time to respond to me and being so polite.

Two thoughts:
First, thank you both for communicating in a mature, respectful manner, even when you disagree. The main 7DTD forum has basically decended into a ridiculous soup of flaming invective over video game preferences. Madman, kudos for encouraging a respectful environment.

Second, related to the original topic, I'm one of those who prefers it when we wipe occasionally. This is especially so when new builds drop that significantly impact progress, but for me it is even true during stable builds. If we keep a seed for more than 6 months my interest tends to drift. (Then again, I'm one of those crazies who would play a single-death-and-your-out game for 7DTD if such a thing was a feasible option.)

I'd play on this server either way, though.
